Azikel Refinery Project : McDermott wins engineering and procurement contract

Azikel Refinery Project : McDermott International has bagged an engineering and procurement contract from Azikel Petroleum for the modular Hydro-Skimming Refinery project in Nigeria.

The refinery, which is to be built in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, will have a capacity of 12,000 BPD.

According to McDermott, the scope of its contract includes the detailed engineering and design of the inside battery limits (ISBL) modular refinery. The contract also calls for the supply of equipment and all tagged items within the ISBL.

The company did not disclose the contract value but indicated it to be in the range of $50 million and $250 million.

McDermott said that it has been working with Azikel Petroleum for a couple of years, and most recently worked on an extended front-end engineering design (FEED). The company said that the next phase of the award will use its vast modularization experience and expertise.

Tareq Kawash – McDermott Senior Vice President, Europe, Middle East, Africa, commenting on the Azikel Refinery Project contract, said: “McDermott has been an integral part of what is one of the few refineries to be built in Nigeria and we look forward to expanding our presence further by delivering the next phase of this important project.

“Our decades of modularization experience makes us uniquely positioned to deliver this scope and the team has done a great job of developing a simple process design that meets all of Azikel’s product specification requirements.”

McDermott revealed that the engineering and design for the Azikel Refinery Project are slated to be executed from its office in Tyler, Texas with the backing of its Mexico City office.

The company will procure equipment from US domestic and also international suppliers.

Azikel Petroleum is building the Azikel Refinery Project as a grassroots facility and is said to have carried out extensive work to prepare the site for construction. The early work covers site reclamation and backfilling, building of roads, perimeter wall, drainage, and security gates.

Construction is also in progress for a 656-foot pier with shoreline protection, which will be used for delivering the refinery modules and other equipment, said Mc Dermott.
